Character Meme
This is a veeery old character meme I started in 2011 and never finished. I can't remember what canon-point I was playing Chrono in when I started this. But a friend linked me to this saying she wanted to read the rest, and I feel like finishing it, so...I am!
This is more headcanon than canon, except when I refer back to the manga. I'm going with "post-canon" as a canon point when I have to. I'll leave all of my old text, but edit some stuff here and there when I no longer agree with it, and note when the new stuff starts.
Original intro:
"I'm doing this because...I can! And because it's been a while since I've played Chrono, so it'll be good to become a bit more solid on his head canon."
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Tall, over six feet--I'm not sure exactly how tall, though. 6'3" maybe? (2014 edit: Maybe even a little taller than that. Let's say 6'4" unsealed. He has a canon height in his sealed form but I'm too lazy to look it up at the moment, I remember it being a little under 5 feet.)His build is muscular and athletic, although not to the extent of, like...a body builder or anything. Despite being muscular he still has a pretty lean build (probably so both him and Aion can count as bishounen).
2. How old is he?
It's never given in canon, although we know that he was an adult in 1870, 54 years before canon. I've heard that Moriyama once gave his age as "around 85" at a con once, which sounds about right so that's what I go with.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
He definitely has a habit of slouching. Him and Aion are the exact same height, but he often looks shorter around Aion because of how he carries himself. He seems more comfortable when he's folding in on himself, he's very often shown sitting with one or both of his knees tucked up against his chest, or with his back bent, or with his chin in his hand. He'll sometimes bring himself to his full height when fighting--but even then, he'll sometimes go into more of a beast-like crouch.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He's pretty fit other than his horns being gone, which is a pretty big disability for a demon. Demons slowly starve to death from a lack of astral energy without their horns. Thanks to his contract with Rosette he can usually overcome that, but he purposefully uses as little as possible. (NOTE: this next part refers back to the game I used to play him at when I started this. This would only apply in a game that had requirements about powers or how a character looks, obviously.) If powers switched back on while he was here, he'd start to feel the ill effects of it again (and wouldn't be able to go into his energy-saving child form due to the aging-up requirements, so he'd probably have a tough time).
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Generally pretty relaxed and casual. He takes long strides, but that's more because of how tall he is. He's usually cautious, but can get a little spazzy and flaily while trying to keep up with Rosette's antics.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
He's pretty handsome if you look past some of the creepier "demon" features, although I don't think he thinks of himself as all that good looking. I don't think he has that high of an opinion of himself, so he thinks he looks average. He doesn't really take, like...the best care in his appearance, so I don't think he cares all that much. (The difference between Aion and Chrono in the way they dress and present themselves is pretty striking since they're twins. The only time Chrono has an outfit that really looks all that stylish is the red suit he wears when he's Rosette's partner...and you have to wonder if he just wanted to look professional. Or if Rosette wanted him to dress nice, since it's shown a few times that *she* has an interest in dressing up.) (2014 edit: In hindsight I dunno if it's fair to say he doesn't care about his appearance just because he doesn't "dress stylishly." He probably dresses in a way that's comfortable to him! Although I think it's probably fair to say that he doesn't care about his appearance all that much at all.)
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
He has tan skin. For whatever reason he's sometimes drawn with lighter skin but...I like tan skin, dammit, so he has tan skin. |D; (2014 edit: Moriyama draws Chrono pretty consistently with pale skin these days, usually the same skintone as, say, Riku or Joshua (who are Japanese and Caucasian, respectively). I'm torn between feeling like it's weird that I care about his skintone that much and being irritated that it's been retconned, both because I think it's annoying that the only character with dark skin is the villain and also because, dammit, the darker skintone just looks nicer with his purple hair.)
It's clear and unscarred since it's pretty difficult for a demon to have scars since they can regenerate. If demons could have scars, he'd have quite a lot of them, probably. But he'd also be missing an arm. He loses his arms a lot.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Purple. I think of it as smooth and silky since it looks...soft...and I like it....*ahem* Um. (2014 edit: Wow, past self, that's awkward.) It's in a shaggy, slightly layered style that he wears down to his shoulders. He used to wear it longer (and still does in his sealed form), but it was burned off during a battle. I'd imagine it'd probably look a little uneven and messy since he didn't really...cut it that way.
9. What color are his eyes?
Red, with cat-like pupils. However, when he's powered up for a fight his eyes turn gold--probably because of an influx of astral energy.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
He has pointed ears, and his fingers are sort of...claw-like? Don't ask me why he keeps his nails pointy sharp. Either his nails just crow that way or...it's...tradition...I don't know. In his "true" form he also has bat-like wings, a metal spiny...tail-like thing (2014 edit: called "tentacle" in a recently translated art book) extending from his neck, and metal caps over the stubs of his horns.
And I'll get to the rest later~
2014 EDIT: OKAY LET'S GET TO THE REST NOW.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
No matter how many times I've filled out this questionnaire, I've never understood what this question is trying to ask and Google is no help. So I'm skipping this question. :P I think it maybe means "where does he feel tension/pain when he's stressed out" and if so...uh...let's say his horn stubs/forehead.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
There's basically three types of styles of clothing we see Chrono wear in canon.
His most recognizable outfit is the red suit he wears in his sealed form after he joins the Magdalene Order. Like I mentioned above it's pretty different from what he usually wears, so I generally assume it's closer to Rosette's taste than his taste. (Although there's elements that he probably added since they're things he pretty much ALWAYS wears--I'll note those later.) It's a pretty typical outfit that a boy of his apparent age in the 1920s would wear (shorts, overalls, knee socks, etc) other than the coat he wears on top of it which is very...anime, for lack of a better term. (He basically looks like he's wearing a classier version of Vash's coat with a shoulder cape he threw over on top.)
When he's in his powered-down, more "human-like" form when he's NOT in the Order (when we can assume he's probably dressing himself) he almost always wears some variation of an Native American outfit--or, at least, what Moriyama thinks Native American people wear. (I haven't been able to find any clothing for a specific tribe that matches what Chrono wears, although I've tried.) It's almost always leather, in natural/earthy colors, with a poncho over on top. In 1870 in his "20s-ish" looking body he's shirtless underneath, only wearing a poncho. I'm pretty sure when he's in his sealed form wearing a variation of this outfit we never see him not wearing the poncho, but I'm guessing he's still shirtless--at the very least, his arms are bare other than his gloves. (The anime character sheet says that he wears a black jumpsuit under the poncho in his sealed form, but since I'm 99% sure he's just wearing gloves that go to his elbow based on some stuff in Moriyama's artbooks and what I can see in the manga scenes I'm pretty sure that's either a mistake or a change they made.)
He also wears a "cowboy" outfit in 1870 that more or less falls under this--instead of a poncho it's a duster, and he's got a cowboy hat on and all, but it still feels very worn and loose like the poncho outfit does.
And then there's what he wears in his fully unsealed, demonic form. It's always in dark colors--black or dark blue, usually with some grey or dark red thrown in. Cut close to his body, and usually shows some skin (which seems pretty typical for demon clothing), either with bare arms or a bare chest, and lightly armored.
The elements that are pretty consistent between all of his outfits are: when in a sealed form, he always has something covering his forehead where his extra eyes would be (usually with some sort of decoration that hints at where his eyes would be--studs, a triangle pattern, etc) and he pretty much always wears black, fingerless gloves/detached sleeves on his arms, except when he's unsealed--he wears metal gauntlets there, instead.
...Wow, this TL;DR'd something fierce and I've barely answered the question. I pretty much just think his taste is that he prefers dark and neutral colors (plus usually some red), wears loser clothing or, when appropriate, shows some skin, favors comfort over style, and always wears something on his arms and a headband if he's sealed. His clothing in his sealed form usually hints at elements of how he looks unsealed, I'm not sure if this is a conscious decision Chrono's making, or it's just a cool design element Moriyama's doing.
(Side note: in the art books he's often shown wearing a school uniform in his sealed form, and it's ALWAYS similar to his sealed outfit--shorts, overalls, knee socks, and a black ribbon tie. He also wears Joshua's suit in an art book image of him in the 1870s, although I thiiink that's probably just something Moriyama did for fun. Although sometimes I like to assume that Aion actually tailored Chrono's old suit to fit Joshua because I find the idea hilarious.)
Also important, weird canon note: Chrono seems to have an ability to infect his clothing with demonic legion that he can manipulate the same way he manipulates his own legion (demon cells) into transforming. This is why his clothing isn't damaged by him transforming, and why what he wears in his unsealed form changes with character development. And also why he had no idea what laundry was until he interacted with humans more, and thusly wore the poncho outfit for like...a month, if not months straight before Mary finally forced him to wash it. (I wish I was joking. Canon is vague and weird on this part.)
Also his wings are part of his clothing. It's true. The notes in the art book say this. It's WEIRD, but canon, AFAIK.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Well, he prefers loose clothing but they still look like they fit him, more or less. He seems comfortable, usually. The only time he seems uncomfortable in what he's wearing is when Satella dresses him, but Satella's tastes are...uncomfortable.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
I guess you could consider the variations on the "poncho outfit" as what he wears in his "free time," so sure?
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Considering MAGIC DEMON CLOTHING and all, I'm guessing commando.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
I more or less like Akira Ishida's performance of Chrono, so...Akira Ishida. Deeper when he's unsealed, light and young sounding when he's sealed to look 12. (Nothing against Greg Ayres' performance since I love his, too, but I think Ishida's is a liiittle closer to how I imagine his voice sounding in tone.)
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
Usually he's pretty quiet, broody and hesitant to speak, although when he's angry or frustrated he's prone to shouting (or out-right growling if he's REALLY angry).
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
He probably speaks English with an American accent, although with the careful pronunciation of someone that's fluent but not speaking their native language. No verbal tics.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
English, fluent. Whatever language the demons speak is his native tongue. I'm not sure if he knows anything else, I'm guessing not.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Nope, he pretty much sticks to English. I'm guessing he might speak in the demon's language when only talking to demons, though.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
When riled up enough he'll speak his mind without thinking, but not exactly eloquently. When he's angry I think he's more blunt and speaks off-the-cuff. He's a little more cautious when he's not getting emotional, though.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Uh, mostly see above. I generally think of him as polite, but not flowery or particularly eloquent. To contrast him with Aion, Aion likes grand, theatrical speaches. Chrono's sincere, but considerate when he's calm, and prone to angry rants when he's not.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
He's well-educated by demon standards, but that means he's a little ignorant of human culture. (He's basically the one asking questions when Moriyama needs to give exposition about historical or cultural facts.) He does enjoy reading and learning, so I think he generally stays well-educated when he has the chance to read up on things. Street-smart, though? Eh...not...really. Again, he's pretty ignorant about human culture so while I think he's observant and can probably notice if someone's obviously lying to him, he wouldn't be able to...I don't know, carefully navigate a tense negotiation with a shop keeper on prices, or something.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He prefers brooding over things. Like Hamlet. He will spend YEARS if not DECADES mulling over something that worries him, trying to figure out the right thing to say or do (or just procrastinate on it and avoid it entirely). But also like Hamlet eventually he's backed into a corner enough or emotionally wound up enough that he'll FINALLY act, based more on emotions and logic, and death and tears and despair happens.
...Actually yeah the longer I think about it the better the Hamlet analogy works in my head. He's fuckin' Hamlet. (I guess in this comparison that would make Joshua like Laertes. ...Yeah that kinda works too. Vaguely.)
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
I think he tries to be more logical to balance out Rosette (who is constantly hot-headed) buuut...he's really not. He's intuitive and idealistic in contrast to Aion's usually cool, logical, almost disconnected thought process. Aion shrugs off humans because they're weak, Chrono values them because of their thoughts and feelings. Aion wants to mercy kill Mary when she's possessed, Chrono fights him on it because he loves Mary and can't bear to kill her. Aion says Chrono's actions to protect Rosette doesn't make any sense, Chrono snaps back "It doesn't have to make sense! She's precious to me!" Emotions trump logic for him almost always.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Military, mostly. A friend of mine asked Moriyama what Viede's childhood was like and IIRC he mostly said something about how the Sinners were raised to be soldiers, sort of like a military academy or something. So, yeah, I think most of his education focused on him being a soldier, although he seems well educated enough that they probably trained him in other stuff, too. If only to make sure he was well-rounded.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
ALL HE CAN DO IS DESTROY. Or...well...that's how he melodramatically puts it. But that's not entirely true--he's most skilled at killing and destruction, yeah, but he's also really good at being a sort of caretaker--cleaning up messes, listening to people's problems and pushing them in the right direction, that sort of thing. He's fascinated by humans and loves learning about other people's stories, although he knows better than to push them to talk about something they don't want to talk about (since he himself has plenty he doesn't want to cover).
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert. He loves people but it drains his energy a lot, and whenever he's upset he's quick to withdraw from others.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
He's very moody. He has good days and bad days, but I think he's fairly depressed, and prone to being melancholic. Because of that (and his trauma) he'd much rather brood than actually confront his problems--when he DOES, it's usually because either Mary or Rosette is forcing him to, either by forcing him to talk to them, forcing him into action because they're in danger, or because they're hurt or dead and that makes him super angry and violent.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Depends on the canon point--the earlier in canon it is, the more he tends to be stand off-ish and suspicious because of what he's been through. Rosette seems to be the one that pushes him to be more friendly to others, so by the time he meets Satella he's much more friendly and open to conversation, although still a little shy, I think.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React. I actually can't think of a time he acts first off the top of my head.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
FIGHT. (RIP MAIM DESTROY)
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
If he's in a good mood he can be lighthearted. Otherwise he tends to be pretty sarcastic. He's one of those people that tends to insult and nitpick people he cares about--sometimes in a teasing way and sometimes just because he's frustrated and irritated with them.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
Not that's revealed in canon, although I'm pretty sure he's supposed to have some sort of PTSD. He has pretty much all the symptoms you'd expect in a fictional portrayal--flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance of anything that reminds him of the trauma (and intense reactions when he's forced to relive it, including seeming physically ill the first time he sees Aion again), problems with anger (I can't tell is this is supposed to be a symptom of his trauma or his demonic instincts or both, but it's definitely a thing), even a little bit of disassociation (he has moments where he "forgets himself" and attacks in a rage, usually when something's poked at some sort of trauma--although again, that could just be his demonic instincts going haywire).
There's also hints that he's VERY depressed, and hints that he's suicidal.
As for how he deals with them, he...typically doesn't, he just avoids thinking about it or broods. Rosette and Remington more or less have to force him to talk it out, although he does eventually learn to control his temper better. Somewhat.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
Being unable to save the young and injured Sinners during their escape from Pandaemonium, his relationship with Mary (particularly her death) and losing his horns, his contract with Rosette.
14. What does he fear?
Losing his loved ones, particularly because of something he did. Not being able to protect people he cares about. Aion.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
I think all Chrono really wants is to be able to not see himself as a "monster" and protect those he cares about. But I think he also feels inept at both.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
His past, mostly because of how much those memories being dragged up hurts him. He usually avoids revealing that he's a demon unless he has to, too, since he's ashamed of being a "monster."
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Uh, well, he had human parents. Canon doesn't discuss his father at all, but my headcanon is he was killed when his mother was kidnapped by demons while pregnant with him and his twin brother, Aion. His mother's name was Lilith, and she was killed and grafted onto the rotting body of the demon's Queen in a mad attempt to save the life of the Queen. She's alive in some sense, but is mostly just the shell of a mix between a horrific arcane abomination and a on-board ship computer.
Chrono didn't know any of this growing up (and only learns it at the end of canon). He was raised as a demon, who view Pandaemonium (whom Lillith was turned into) as the mother of them all. I'd imagine he'd see the Elders, and the older demons who taught him as a child, as something similar to a parental figure.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Aion is his (formerly human) twin brother, and he views him as a close friend and "brother" although until the end of canon he doesn't realize how close their relationship actually is. Growing up he and Aion were very close, but Aion became distant after his coming-of-age ceremony went wrong, and they eventually had a very nasty and violent falling out when Aion ordered him to kill the woman he loved and he refused.
As a demon he was raised to view all demons as his siblings. I don't think he views most of them that way anymore, except for the other Sinners--the young demons who were declared unfit to live and fled for their lives in a desperate rebellion. Because of his betrayal of the Sinners they all view him with varying amounts of anger, disgust and even outright hatred (except for Shader, who he was close to and who sympathizes with the reasons he left). He himself tends to view them less than kindly as well, although after Rizelle's death he grieves for her and seems to feel some amount of guilt for his part in killing her, and he often expresses concern for the other Sinners and is willing to talk with them if they don't approach him as an enemy initially.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Nope, that pretty much covers all of them.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
He views Rosette as family first before he sees her in any sort of romantic way, I think. I think he views Satella and Azmaria as like family as well, although he's not as close to them, but he still cares a lot for him. He probably considers Joshua like a brother, as well, although Joshua is either out-right antagonistic toward him with the horns, or pretty conflicted about how he feels about Chrono (and his contract with Rosette) without them, so they're not close. I think Chrono would WANT to be close to Joshua but completely believes he deserves to be hated by him (and probably projects a bit of that onto Joshua).
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
I'd say Aion was initially Chrono's best friend. After their falling out Chrono's best friend eventually became Rosette. They met when her brother broke a seal on a grave Chrono was sleeping in. Long story!
6. Does he have other close friends?
Azmaria and Satella, like I mentioned above.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He's friendly, but I don't think he makes close friends very easily. Usually the people he gets close to are the people that more or less force him to spend time with them. It's actually kinda good for him, otherwise he'd push everyone away.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Friends. "Family", to him, are other demons, and he mostly resents and despises them.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Single, never married. I don't think demon society even has a concept of marriage. There's no real need, since all demons are children of Pandaemonium.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Soooort of. He and Rosette eventually have mutual romantic feelings for each other, although neither of them admits it until right before they part near the end of the manga. By the time Chrono returns, Rosette's a goner, so...yeah.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
I think a lot of people would say Mary was his first crush, and that...miiight even be canon, although in my headcanon I assumed he had some childhood crushes on demons he knew. (I'm tempted to say his first crush was Aion but that's the shipper in me talking.)
His latest and greatest is Rosette.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Strong leaders, people that will listen to his worries and concerns, a mutually supportive relationship, someone he admires and looks up to. He seems drawn to extroverted people.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
No kids. I think he really likes children, but I'm not sure if he'd want any of his own. He'd probably feel like any kids of his would be doomed to have an unhappy life.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
Basically every demon is an enemy of his on some level, except for maybe Shader. Aion in particular is enemy #1.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
I go back and forth on this a loooot. There's no in-canon evidence that he's attracted to anyone but women. But I also don't know if it's as huge of a deal for his people, either? I honestly tend to lean toward "bisexual unless proven otherwise" buuuut I don't know if that's entirely accurate for him either (as much as I ship him with Aion). So I guess I'd place him at a 1, maybe a 2?
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
I don't think Chrono is entirely inexperienced with sex (although I've seem some people headcanon him as a virgin and I don't think canon contradicts that), and I think he enjoys it, but I don't know if I'd say it's important to him. He places a lot more of an emphasis on emotional connections than sexual attraction, and I don't think he'd sleep with someone that he didn't have some sort of romantic relationship with.
He's also pretty shy, which I think is why he reacts the way he does to Mary and Aion's teasing.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
He has a thing for blonds because...well. All of his love interests are blond. He's turned off by people that don't respect his personal space (IE, Satella).
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
Nope, while the other main characters have canon birthdays, Chrono's is listed as "unknown" in the official guide. I'm not even quite sure what zodiac sign I'd assign him since it has to be something that'd fit Aion, too...and they're practically opposites of each other.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
Ehh, spiritual I guess. Between his powers and what he's experienced in the Order I can't see him denying the existence of some sort of spiritual world. But I definitely don't think he'd be religious. If demons have any sort of religion, he abandoned that when he was labeled a "Sinner," and while I think he's respectful of the Order's beliefs I think he would find some of them pretty off-putting (particularly the fact that he wouldn't be allowed to participate since they see him as a demon, anyway). I've seen some fanfic where he converted and it made sense, but I personally think he's probably skeptical of Christianity.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
He feels very strongly about hurting innocent people. He finds the idea of uninvolved people being hurt or killed during a conflict absolutely appalling, to the point where he calls Aion's actions unforgivable.
However, he himself is careless toward the people around him while he's in a rage (to the point where it's implied that he indirectly killed several people, including possibly a child, during his rampage in San Fransisco). His own anger issues and instincts actively work against his distaste toward violence, which causes a lot of his self loathing IMO.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
As long as they don't harm anyone I think he's pretty respectful and is even interested in learning about them to some degree.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He's very harsh toward other demons, including himself. While fighting other demons he often openly mocks their fighting style or way of thinking (for example, calling out Rizelle's tendency to use other people to fight for her and using trickery rather than fighting face-to-face, mocking other demons' ranks, etc), and he also goes as far as to describe himself as a "monster" who can 'only destroy."
It's at least somewhat rational since demons generally ARE very violent and prone to hurting innocent humans, although I think there's at least some resentment caused by his past traumas.
He'd also be pretty unlikely to trust Aion without good reason, even if Aion WASN'T doing something underhanded (although Aion is usually doing something underhanded).
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
I don't think the Order pays Rosette very well (and I doubt Chrono gets any pay at all), and it's mentioned off-hand a few times that Rosette's expected to cover at least some of the cost of the destruction she causes while working for them, so they're pretty much perpetually in debt. I think once they start traveling with Satella she ends up covering a lot of the bills they rack up, which I could see her using as a weapon against Rosette during one of their many, many fights. I think it causes Chrono a lot of stress.
Once he leaves the Order...I have no idea. I don't see him ever becoming very well-off, particularly since he prefers not calling attention to himself and he needs to keep a low profile in order to avoid getting Joshua or Remington in trouble (since he's supposed to be dead and all). He probably either does a lot of little odd jobs or eventually settles down and gets a modest job...but yeah, I doubt he'd ever get anything that pays particularly well. (Although he'd probably have an easier time budgeting without Rosette constantly racking up more bills!)
(I'm of course assuming that he doesn't die at the end of manga canon. I'm 100% sure he's alive, honestly.)
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
It's implied he was expected to be "high-ranked" in demon society, so before the Tuning Ceremony I'd imagine that he was pretty well-regarded. Of course, now among demons he's an outcast, and he doesn't fare much better with humans, considering how they feel about demons (in the beginning of canon) and what he actually DOES by the end of it.
I think to some degree he was always a little uncomfortable with demon society and felt like a bit of an outcast, so the change probably didn't effect him as badly as I suspect it did for Aion, but there's still a few moments in the manga which feel to me like he does harbor some anger and resentment over the change. (Although considering how that change included "being hunted down like animals, considered little better than mindless beasts, and targeted among with all of his younger siblings for mass slaughter" I don't think it's at all unjustified.)
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
He used to live in Eden, which as hinted by the name was something of a refuge and oasis for the Sinners IMO (despite the many, many traumatic things that end up happening there throughout canon). Once he joins the Order, he lives in the Elder's home on the Order's grounds. Originally this was because the Elder pretended that he was a test subject in order to allow him to stay near Rosette, but eventually I think he stayed there just because that was what he was used to. However, Chrono considers "home" to be by Rosette's side, so the Elder's place is really just a place to crash.
I have no idea where Chrono lives after Rosette's death. He probably roams around a lot--wouldn't want people to catch on to how little he's aged.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
The rare times he actually has spending money? Probably either books or things for Rosette or his other friends. But considering it's Rosette that earns the money in the first place, I doubt he sees very little of it as spending money for himself.
I guess after she's still he still buys...books? ...And flowers for her grave.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
An exorcist in the Magdalan Order. He's pretty good at it, considering he knows demon weaknesses well and he's trained to be a fighter, although he prefers to be on the sidelines as support for Rosette to keep from using his powers as much as possible. I think he takes some pride in when he's able to protect others, but I think he's also a little conflicted, knowing that his job is more or less to murder a bunch of the people he's supposed to see as "brothers."
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
I think he likes to read a lot. I also headcanon that he has a fondness for music and likes to listen to records whenever he can. Oh, and another headcanon thing that I formerly used waaaay too often was a love of baking.
(Funny side note: I came up with that before I met my husband, but Anthony loves to bake, too.)
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Okay, so first we have to address if demons have to eat or not. I've seen people assume that they don't, and only subsist off of astral energy, but I think that's a liiittle extreme, particularly since there's scenes like Fiore scolding Shader about eating canned food when she's not around to cook (which implies that Shader's not just eating because Fiore cooks good food and it's tasty, but because she does need to eat on some level). I think demons can probably get by without eating, but to do so for very long requires them to basically hibernate (like Chrono in Mary's tomb).
Okay, so, Chrono's eating habits. I think when he's taking care of Rosette he never skips any meals (because he's eating with her, and he has to make sure that SHE eats), but I can see him forgetting to eat or just not caring some times if he's on his own. Since he doesn't often have spare cash he doesn't eat out much, but that doesn't bother him too much since he loves to cook. (But Rosette probably likes to eat out, which he probably takes to mean that she hates his cooking, sometimes...)
He's not a particularly picky eater. He used to drink alcohol socially with the Sinners, and...I can kiiinda see him drinking some after Rosette's death (because...y'know), but only after prohibition. During prohibition he seems to more or less avoid drinking alcohol, although he doesn't go as far as to tell OTHERS they shouldn't drink.
There's probably also that whole "looks like he's 12" thing which explains why he pretty much never drinks after he loses his horns.
Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:
1. Color? Red!
2. Smell? Freshly baked bread, and drying laundry.
3. Time of day? Late afternoon, when the day is starting to cool.
4. Season? Summer. It's when he met the Christophers, after all. He has a lot of good memories in summer.
5. Book? Hmm, good question. I'm not sure what Chrono would read. Something adventurous, but ultimately happy, I think.
6. Music? Jazz, but he has a secret fondness for hymns.
7. Place? Any sort of quiet lake away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
8. Substance? Uh, geez, I dunno. Bread dough?
9. Plant? Any sort of big, solid tree that's good to climb in.
10. Animal? Dogs! Preferably big, cuddly ones to little yippy dogs.
